**This Opportunity**
WSP is currently initiating a search for an **Associate Geologist** for our Pittsburgh-area office located in **Wexford, Pennsylvania** . From this location, our team of geoprofessionals provides services to clients in the oil & gas, transportation, mining, and other industrial sectors, primarily in the Appalachian Basin. This entry-level position provides an opportunity to join a fast-paced team that provides solutions on geological, civil, and geotechnical engineering projects. The work entails a variety of office-related and outdoor “hands-on” activities, with a need to carefully follow instructions, document activities, solve problems, and provide proactive communication.
We are seeking a geologist with an interest in geohazard identification and mitigation, field mapping, and soil/rock logging. The selected candidate must be comfortable with the use of technology in the practice of geology and working in the field with project teams to support geologic and geotechnical field assessments and subsurface investigations. This position will include opportunities on a variety of projects such as linear alignments for pipelines, transportation corridors, and infrastructure siting. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated education or field experience in geomorphology, geohazards, and geology of the Appalachian Basin. As part of a global company, the selected candidate may have the opportunity to work on field assignments beyond the Appalachian Basin.
**Your Impact**
+ Work with project teams on geohazard assessment and geotechnical/geological engineering projects that involve field activities, site observations, data evaluation, and desktop assesments
+ Safely perform work in the office and field; fieldwork may occur out-of-town in all seasonal weather conditions, while using equipment (with an ability to lift and move approximately 50 pounds without assistance) and operating vehicles on behalf of the company
+ Perform geologic field reconnaissance and mapping for the identification of geologic hazards using field-based data collection applications
+ Conduct subsurface field exploration tasks including observation and documentation of test pit explorations, dynamic cone penetrometor testing, and support of drilling activities for the installation of geotechnical instrumentation
+ Collect a range of field data, including from groundwater and slope monitoring instrumentation; interpret subsurface conditions, and prepare exploration field notes
+ Perform data compilation, prepare borehole (and other) logs, conduct GIS data analysis and management, research site geology, and other related duties to support project teams and report preparation
+ Local and national travel (generally up to 50% of the time) with possible opportunities for long-term assignments at project sites
+ Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
+ Complete training on assigned tasks.
+ Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
+ Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
**Who You Are**
**Required Qualifications**
+ Bachelor’s degree in geology, engineering geology, or related field
+ 1 to 3 years of post-education experience.
+ Computer skills and experience with industry standard commercial computer software including -Microsoft Office and basic data management applications
+ Detail oriented with strong verbal and writing skills with a positive attitude as well as the ability to work both independently and on teams
+ Familiar with geologic field skills such as field mapping and identification of geologic hazards
+ Ability to be comfortable in remote settings and a willingness to perform a variety of tasks as needed to complete an assignment.
+ Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening.
+ This role is subject to a client-mandated drug/alcohol testing policy. As such, employee may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests. A copy of this policy will be provided during employee onboarding and is available upon applicant request.
+ Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
+ Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
+ Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
+ Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
+ Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
+ Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
**Preferred Qualifications:**
+ Master’s degree in geology, engineering geology, or related field
+ Competence in understanding geomorphology, surface processesg, geohazards, and geology of the Appalachian Basin.
+ Experience or education using GIS and remote sensing data (e.g., LiDARr and aerial imagery) to identify geologic hazards using remote sensing data
+ Experience or education with collecting field data and samples, and using field-based data collection applications
+ Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training
