Job Profile Summary

ERM is looking to recruit a Bat Ecologist who can support the biodiversity services within the Onshore Renewables team and provide quality ecological consultancy services to clients.


  • Organize and implement field surveys, with a focus on bats, including using a range of survey techniques and installation of data collection devices;

  • Liaise as appropriate with in-house specialists, sub-contractors, developers and other relevant bodies;

  • Manage small projects, ensuring the clients key requirements are identified (through questioning) and seek solutions to constraints following/during site visits;

  • Responsible for ensuring that any work carried out is done so on time and to budget;

  • Plan and carry out ecological field surveys autonomously or as part of a team, and provide instruction to sub-contractors;

  • Collate ecological field data, create maps for reports and field surveys using ArcGIS;

  • Input and manage ecological, ornithological and other field data;

  • Prepare simple reports and other deliverables, ensuring the production of high quality outputs following review;

  • Provide support to other members of staff when requested

  • Any other duties and responsibilities associated with the job role that the employee is reasonably required to undertake.

Skills & Experience Required

  • A minimum of a BSc degree in Zoology, Conservation, Botany, Entomology, Ecology or Ornithology, or similar; or, a Diploma in Nature Conservation;

  • Basic knowledge of South African ecology as it relates to bats;

  • 3+ years' experience within the field.

  • Excellent communication skills both written a spoken;

  • Ability to speak or understand Afrikaans;

  • Good IT skills, including word processing and spreadsheets;

  • Basic GIS capabilities;

  • Quantitative, numerical and analytical skills;

  • Excellent attention to detail; and

  • Valid Driver’s License.
