Job Description

AECOM is seeking an Entry Level Architectural Historian for full-time employment based in Southern California (preferably San Diego, Orange, or Los Angeles areas). This position will support our Environmental Planning & Permitting team within our Environment business line. The entry-level Architectural Historian will conduct historic research, field inventories, and built environment resource assessments pursuant to the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 and Section 110, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) compliance.

This position is expected to begin in May/June 2024.

The successful candidate would become a part of a dynamic Southern California and West Coast environmental planning team that enjoys excellent relationships with a wide range of local, regional, and State agencies, as well as private and non-profit clients. AECOM’s projects often combine environmental analysis and review with urban design, policy planning, engineering and design, and other related elements.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting reconnaissance and intensive survey, historical research, and historic resource analysis pursuant to the NHPA Section 106 and NEPA/CEQA.
  • Evaluating built environment resources for eligibility for listing in local registers, the California Register of Historical Resources, and the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Preparing State of California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) 523 forms.
  • Preparing archival documentation, such as Historic American Building Survey (HABS) and Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) documentation.
  • Preparing written documents, including historic contexts, resource analysis, historic property inventory forms, and technical reports.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • BA/BS or higher in Architectural History, History, Historic Preservation, or a related discipline.
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License required to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices.
  • As a condition of employment, selected candidate must pass a Motor Vehicle Records review and a substance abuse test.
  • Due to the nature of work, US citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant experience.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of the larger cultural resources team.
  • MA or MS in Architectural History, History, or a related field.
  • Meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology.
  • Experience in building materials conservation.
  • Excellent proactive communication skills in terms of responsiveness, detailed assessments, and risk management.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks while meeting established deadlines.
  • High level of organization, attention to detail, and excellent technical writing skills.
  • Self-motivated, driven, hardworking, and accountable.
  • CAD and/or GIS skills.
  • Flexibility to travel on overnight or long-term projects.

Additional Information

  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
  • Willingness/ability to travel and conduct fieldwork throughout Southern California.
  • Travel of 20% is required for this position.
  • This position requires a hybrid work schedule which includes in office work in San Diego, Los Angeles, or Orange, CA. The selected candidate must be available to work in San Diego, Los Angeles, or Orange, CA on a scheduled basis.
